Nomadic Retirement Calculator

What is the Nomadic Retirement Calculator?

The Nomadic Retirement Calculator helps you model a flexible retirement built around location independence, lower fixed costs and phased work. It projects your finances year by year across three stages of life, showing whether a nomadic or semi-retired lifestyle is financially sustainable.

How the Calculator Works?

This calculator models your life in three distinct phases:

Pre–semi-retirement: You are working, earning and saving. Contributions can flow into pensions and investments while assets grow in real terms.

Semi-retirement or nomadic phase: Spending typically falls, earned income may reduce to part-time levels, and lifestyle costs may include seasonal uplifts or one-off setup expenses. Assets are drawn in a defined order if income does not cover spending.

Settled phase: You transition into a more traditional retirement with higher or different costs and no earned income. Pensions and the State Pension form a greater share of income.

The model runs year by year from your current age to your chosen end age. It tracks income, spending, lumpy costs, contributions and withdrawals. If cash or assets are exhausted in any year, the plan is flagged as unsustainable and the age of failure is shown.

You can also use built-in solver tools to find the earliest sustainable semi-retirement age or the minimum part-time income required to make the plan work.

Step One: Set Your Timeline and Assets

Enter your current age, semi-retirement start age, full retirement age, settle-down age and end age. Add your cash, investments and pension pots.

Step Two: Define Spending and Income Across Phases

Enter spending for working, nomadic and settled phases. Add earned income, part-time income, DB pensions and State Pension where applicable.

Step Three: Review Sustainability and Optimise

See whether your plan succeeds to your end age. Use the solver tools to test earlier transitions or adjust part-time income levels.

What is the Retirement Spending Calculator?

It is a UK-focused budgeting and projection tool that tracks retirement spending by category and shows how costs evolve over time with regional and inflation adjustments.

What does “nomadic” mean in this model?

It refers to a semi-retirement phase with reduced fixed costs, flexible location and optional part-time income.

Are the figures inflation-adjusted?

Yes. All projections are in real terms so you can see spending power rather than inflated nominal values.

What happens if the plan fails?

If assets are exhausted in any year, the calculator shows the age of failure and highlights the shortfall.

Can I model pension access rules?

Yes. Pensions are only accessible from the specified pension access age, defaulting to 57.

What are the solver buttons?

They automatically calculate the earliest semi-retirement age or the minimum part-time income required to make the plan sustainable.

Can I include one-off setup costs?

Yes. You can model big-ticket items such as a van purchase or relocation costs.

How are withdrawals handled?

Withdrawals follow your chosen order, typically cash first, then investments, then pensions once accessible.

Can I export the results?

Yes. A CSV export is available with full year-by-year projections.
