What is the Dream Retirement Lifestyle Builder?
The Dream Retirement Lifestyle Builder helps you turn a Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) lifestyle band into a retirement number that feels like your own. The PLSA publishes the UK Retirement Living Standards: Minimum, Moderate and Comfortable for one-person and two-person households. Start with the basics, then add the dreams that matter to you.
Pick PLSA Minimum, Moderate or Comfortable for one person or two people. Then stack dream packs such as winter sun, grandkids, travel, culture and a bucket list to see an annual lifestyle spend and a simple pot sketch.
Illustrative estimates only. Not financial advice. PLSA figures are editable planning defaults: check retirementlivingstandards.org.uk. Results are not a forecast of investment returns.
How the Dream Lifestyle Builder works
Choose one person or two people, select a PLSA Minimum, Moderate or Comfortable floor, then add the dream packs you would like to test.
The tool shows the PLSA base, your editable dream extras, the annual dream year and a pot sketch. It also lets you include a State Pension offset so you can see the private pot need after that income.
Use the result as a conversation starter. Change the band, household, packs and assumptions until the lifestyle number sounds like a life you would actually enjoy.
Step 1: Pick your PLSA floor
Choose PLSA Minimum, Moderate or Comfortable and tell the calculator whether the plan is for one person or two people.
Step 2: Stack your dream packs
Switch on editable packs for winter sun, grandkids, travel, culture, food and other extras that make your version of retirement feel personal.
Step 3: Name your dream year
Give the calculator your annual spend assumptions and it will show the dream year, the State Pension offset and a simple pot sketch at the selected rate.

What makes a dream retirement feel like yours?
A PLSA band gives you a sensible UK floor. Dream packs help you name the extras that turn a generic retirement budget into your own plan.
Pick a PLSA floor
Start with Minimum, Moderate or Comfortable, for one person or two people, then make the base fit your household.
Stack dream packs
Add winter sun, family time, travel, food or culture. Packs make the cost of a good year visible and editable.
Name your dream year
Put a name to the year you want, then compare its annual spend with your income and saving choices.
Pot sketch is a guide
The pot sketch is a simple guide after the State Pension offset. It is not a forecast and it is not advice.
What a dream retirement year can look like
The calculator does not tell you which lifestyle to choose. It starts from a PLSA Retirement Living Standard, published by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association, then adds optional dream extras so you can see the annual cost and a simple pot sketch.
Carol, winter sun without selling up
Age 62 · One-person · PLSA Moderate · Sunseeker winters
Carol owns her flat in Manchester. She wants a Moderate everyday lifestyle at home, plus about seven weeks in Spain most winters, without moving abroad for good.
- Moderate base: about £32,700 a year
- Sunseeker extra: about £6,000 a year (editable in the tool)
- Dream year before State Pension offset: about £38,700
What Carol takes from it
She can see roughly what those winter months add on top of a Moderate year. That makes it easier to ask: is this worth one more year of work, or a cut somewhere else?
James and Nisha, family days and better dinners
Both 58 · Two-person · PLSA Comfortable · Grandkids & family glue + Foodie calendar
They want a Comfortable shared lifestyle, plus money set aside for grandchildren’s activities and a bit more eating out than the standard basket assumes.
- Comfortable two-person base: about £62,700 a year
- Family glue and foodie packs stacked on top (editable)
- The hero line names both packs in their dream year total
What James and Nisha take from it
They can see the extra cost of helping with the grandchildren and eating out more often. Turning one pack off shows how quickly the yearly total comes back down.
Ben, theatre nights and one big trip
Age 55 · One-person · PLSA Moderate · Culture vulture + Bucket-list big trip
Ben is happy with Moderate day-to-day living. He wants theatre and city breaks most years, plus one larger long-haul trip every other year (cost spread across two years in the tool).
- Moderate base covers everyday living
- Culture and bucket-list packs sit on top as optional extras
- Annualising the big trip avoids counting the full cost every year
What Ben takes from it
He can see how much theatre, city breaks and that bigger trip add above everyday Moderate living, before he decides anything about pensions.
What is the Dream Retirement Lifestyle Builder?
The Dream Retirement Lifestyle Builder estimates annual retirement lifestyle spending from your chosen PLSA band and dream packs. It is an illustration, not a financial plan.
What is the PLSA?
The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) is a UK pensions industry body. Its Retirement Living Standards give three ballpark annual spending levels (Minimum, Moderate, Comfortable) so you can picture a lifestyle in pounds rather than guessing. This calculator starts from those standards, then lets you add dream extras. Verify current figures on retirementlivingstandards.org.uk.
What are the PLSA bands?
PLSA Minimum, Moderate and Comfortable are reference bands for different UK retirement lifestyles. Check the current figures at retirementlivingstandards.org.uk.
Can I use one person or two people?

What are dream packs?

Turn packs on or off and edit the amounts to test different dream years.
How does the State Pension offset work?
The State Pension offset subtracts expected State Pension income before the pot sketch is shown. It is an illustration, not a forecast.
How should I choose my dream packs?
Choose packs by naming the extras that would make your retirement feel like yours. Start with one or two, then adjust the amounts until the dream year feels realistic.
Can I switch packs off and compare the gap?
Yes. Turn a pack off to compare the annual dream year and the pot sketch. Affordability is separate.
Does the pot sketch include a State Pension offset?
The pot sketch uses annual spend after the State Pension offset and the selected rate.
It is a simple guide, not advice.
Are pack amounts editable?
Yes. Pack amounts are editable, so you can use your own figures and compare them with the defaults.
Can I compare Minimum, Moderate and Comfortable?

Does this tell me whether I can afford to retire?
No. It shows lifestyle spending and a simple pot sketch. Use regulated advice to assess pensions, investments, tax and affordability.
Is this based on PLSA guidance?
It uses PLSA Retirement Living Standards as an editable starting point, not a forecast or recommendation.
Check current PLSA figures on retirementlivingstandards.org.uk and take regulated advice for personal decisions.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is not financial, tax, investment, pension or longevity advice.

Behind Retirement Calculators
Built from the questions I was asking myself
I'm Ryan, the person behind Retirement Calculators. I started the site after selling an online business and trying to understand what our pensions, ISAs, investments and property actually meant for the way we wanted to live.
The calculators are built around those real decisions: whether you could work less, retire earlier, spend more now or use your money differently. They will not give you a perfect answer, but they can make the trade-offs much easier to see.
Have an idea for a calculator, spotted something that could be clearer, or want to ask me about the site?
