What is the Purpose Runway Calculator?
The Purpose Runway Calculator helps you sketch current purpose beside paid work, then what you are freeing time for once work reduces or stops. Open time for appointments and errands is welcome.
Purpose can be quieter or social. Hours you already do sit beside work. New purpose after stop is modelled separately. You can also keep some paid hours. Free time can stay free. The calculator only measures hours. It does not score a better life.
It is not Financial Runway (months of cash), not a health forecast, and not advice.
How the Calculator Works?
Enter your ages, how many hours paid work takes now, and purpose hours now and after you stop.
Purpose now sits beside work. Stopping frees the work block. Extra purpose after stop is how much of that freed block you claim. The rest can stay open. It offers three illustrations: keep that open space, add a few anchors, or grow gently after you stop. Money, tax and health forecasts are left out. Figures are illustrative only, not advice.
Step 1: Add ages and work hours
Set your current age, when you stop paid work, how far you plan ahead, and hours of paid work each week.
Step 2: Add purpose you already expect
Tap social or quieter ideas, or add your own. Set hours now and hours you expect after you stop.
Step 3: Compare free time and approaches
See purpose now, purpose after stop, hours freed, and how much of that block stays open. Download a CSV if you want the figures in a spreadsheet.

Understanding Your Results
The headline figures are purpose now, purpose after stop, hours freed when work stops, and how much of that freed block stays open. Purpose now sits beside work. It is not stacked on top of your work week. The grade only labels that sketch. It is not a recommendation. Free time can stay free.
Purpose now
Hours you already spend on purpose beside paid work. These do not use up your work week.
Purpose after stop
What you expect once paid work stops. If this is higher than now, the extra comes from the freed work block.
Freed hours still open
Of the hours freed when work stops, how many are still without extra purpose. Free time can stay free.
What this leaves out
Money, tax, health forecasts, couples’ schedules, and whether quiet time is what you want are not in this sketch.
What purpose and free time can look like after work
Purpose you already do sits beside paid work. When work stops, those work hours free up. Extra purpose after stop is how much of that freed block you claim. These examples show three different starting lists.
Nora, purpose already beside a full work week
Age 55 · Stops at 62 · Plans to 85 · Work 35 hrs · Purpose now 28 · After stop 28
Nora already has caring, a club and fitness beside her job. Those 28 hours are not inside her 35 work hours. If purpose stays about the same after she stops, the whole 35-hour work block opens up.
- Purpose now: 28 hrs
- Purpose after stop: 28 hrs
- Hours freed when work stops: 35 hrs
- Freed hours still open: 35 hrs
What Nora takes from it
She is not short of purpose. Stopping mainly frees her work week. She can keep that open, test a few anchors into part of it, or grow more gently later. The numbers are a planning figure, not a timetable.
Craig, thin purpose next to a long work week
Age 48 · Stops at 60 · Plans to 85 · Work 45 hrs · Purpose now 8 · After stop 8
Craig’s week is still mostly work. Outside that he only has a thin list. If that list stays at eight hours after he stops, all 45 work hours free up in this sketch.
- Purpose now: 8 hrs
- Purpose after stop: 8 hrs
- Hours freed when work stops: 45 hrs
- Freed hours still open: 45 hrs
What Craig takes from it
He sees how large the freed work block is if purpose stays thin. He tests adding a few anchors into part of that block rather than claiming every old work hour. The early years can stay lighter.
Aisha, planning extra purpose into freed work hours
Age 60 · Stops at 66 · Plans to 88 · Work 30 hrs · Purpose now 12 · After stop 30
Aisha already does about 12 hours of purpose beside work. After she stops she expects 30. That is 18 hours of extra purpose drawn from the 30 freed work hours, leaving 12 still open.
- Purpose now: 12 hrs
- Purpose after stop: 30 hrs
- Extra purpose after stop: 18 hrs
- Freed hours still open: 12 hrs
What Aisha takes from it
She can see how much of the freed work block she is claiming. That still says nothing about health, money, or whether she wants quieter days. Extra purpose and a week she enjoys are not the same thing.
What is the Purpose Runway Calculator?
The Purpose Runway Calculator helps you sketch purpose you already do beside paid work, what you expect after you stop, and how much of the freed work block stays open. Quieter and social activities both count. Free time can stay free. It is an illustration only, not advice.
Is this the same as Financial Runway?
No. Financial Runway is about how many months your savings could last. Purpose Runway is about hours in the week after paid work stops.
What counts as purpose?
Anything you expect to take regular time after you stop paid work. That includes social time (family and friends, clubs, volunteering, catch-ups) and quieter time (learning a language, reading or study, a creative project at home, fitness or outdoor time). Many people also lose workplace chat and structure when they leave. Add your own labels. Sleep, washing up and basic chores are usually left out unless you want them in the model.
Does purpose have to be social?
No. Social purpose counts, and so does quieter purpose. The tool treats both as first-class in the hour model. It does not tell you to get out more.
What about quieter activities?
Learning a language, reading or study, a creative project at home, and gentle outdoor or fitness time all count in the hour model. For many people that quieter mix is as important as clubs or volunteering.
What are freed hours still open?
When paid work stops, those work hours free up. Extra purpose after stop is how much of that block you claim beyond purpose you already do. Freed hours still open are what remains. Free time can stay free.
Do purpose hours stack on top of work?
No. Purpose now sits beside paid work. If Nora does 28 hours of purpose and 35 hours of work, that is not a 63-hour claim on one pot. Stopping frees the work block. If purpose stays at 28, she gains about 35 open hours from work ending.
Do I need to schedule every hour?
No. The calculator does not ask you to claim every freed work hour. Rest and unplanned time count. A few regular activities are usually enough to start.
What is planning-to age?
How far you want to look when comparing approaches. It is your assumption, not an ONS or NHS life expectancy forecast. Change it if you want a shorter or longer horizon.
What are the three approaches?
Keep open space leaves the freed work block open if purpose stays about the same. Add a few anchors tests modest extra purpose drawn from that freed block. Grow gently eases toward about half the still-open freed hours over a few years. None of them ask you to claim every work hour.
Does a fuller week mean I should retire?
No. The sketch only compares hours. Money, health and family still sit outside it. For money months use Financial Runway. For free years versus wealth use One More Year.
Is free time a problem?
Not by itself. Many people want quieter days. The model shows how much of the freed work block stays open. Whether that mix feels right is your call.
How is this different from Someday Tax?
Someday Tax is about trips and experiences you keep putting off. Purpose Runway is about the ordinary week after paid work stops.
How is this different from Life Weeks?
Life Weeks shows life as a finite number of weeks, and how many of those may be paid work. Purpose Runway looks at purpose and free time in the ordinary week once that paid work stops.
Can two people use it?
This model is one person’s week. For two stop dates and money worries between partners, use tools aimed at couples’ timelines.
Can I export the results?
Yes. After the results, Get my CSV downloads purpose now, purpose after stop, hours freed, still-open hours and the three approaches. You will be asked for your name and email.
Is this financial advice?
No. The figures are planning illustrations only. They are not a personal recommendation about when to stop work or how to spend retirement.

Behind Retirement Calculators
Built from the questions I was asking myself
I'm Ryan, the person behind Retirement Calculators. I started the site after selling an online business and trying to understand what our pensions, ISAs, investments and property actually meant for the way we wanted to live.
The calculators are built around those real decisions: whether you could work less, retire earlier, spend more now or use your money differently. They will not give you a perfect answer, but they can make the trade-offs much easier to see.
